Instead of sharpening them, could the guy who sharpened my skates purposely dulled them?

I got my skates sharpened by this guy in staten island, and usually they do them really good and sharp. So i got on the ice today expecting to fall a little since they were just sharpened and usually i would have to dull them a bit myself. Then my coach saw me trying to stop but ending up in a middle split and he said that it was cuz my skates were too dull, not sharp. Any who, after i had to miss the try outs cuz of the skates, i went to go get them sharpened somewhere else. The guy there said he couldnt believe what they did to my blade, cuz he completely rounded the edge and it was worse than a butter knife. Is that just crappy sharpening or what?

Instead of sharpening them, could the guy who sharpened my skates purposely dulled them?
Their is definitely an art to skate sharpening, I found a really good guy and have stayed with him for years. Same guy that did Crosby's skates his whole life. He is so busy, you have to drop them off for a few hours or even the day before but he does a bang up job.
Reply:yup. that's hapened to me a couple times. took three tries in three diferent places to gte them sharp enough where i would get any friendlier with the ice
Reply:Wow, yeah, this sucks.

I once took them to Scheel's to get them sharpened, and I swear the only sharpened the outside edge. The inside edge was duller than anything and the outside edge was very sharp.

The guys at my Scheel's usually do a great job, but this time was an exception.

Ages ago, I saw a guy 'sharpen' the pick out of some girl's figure skates because he only knew how to sharpen hockey skates. Seriously. It was at my previous town's ice arena.

It was so sad.
Reply:ya thats happened to me but yet Ive always wondered if you were on a highway and u opened your door and put out you skates is it would work
Reply:Most skateshops have both a grinding machine and a sharpening machine, which use different grade stones. I used to be a skate sharpener at Calgary's Olympic Oval, and I found that dull skates were either the result of an undressed grinding medium or an improper adjustment to the level of the sharpening axis. If your skates had a rounded edge (in section), I bet that the technician did not recalibrate the vice which holds the skates (making the sharpening angle off centre). Otherwise, they may not have sharpened them at all.
