In-line skates vs. Quads?

I can inline skate reasonably well (for recreation and long distance, not aggressive skating performing stunts and such), but recently I went to a skating rink and got on a pair of quads. I had no form whatsoever and had to concentrate to keep my balance. I thought the transition would be easier from inlines to quads, but apparently it is not.





It seems like people can to more artistic things on quads, but it seems that inlines are better for outdoors or recreation. What do you think?

In-line skates vs. Quads?
I started skating on quads when I was 3 years old. Skated until I was 20! Then I stopped completely and was introduced to in-line skating 15 years later. I found in-line skating a lot easier, and it was much faster! 4 years later, I went to a retro indoor skating rink in NYC, and saw skaters still boogying and skating on quads. I decided to buy a pair, and try it out and you are right, it was hard to transition from in-line to quads. I felt the side to side motion is more pronounced when skating on quads, and I could not dance %26amp; bounce around on them like I used to! (^_^) I know some in-line figure skaters, and their motions are closer to ice-skating than quad-skating. Maybe I have to save money to buy a pair of the in-line figure skates? Of course, you can also get a pair of the new Skorpion Quadlines that look like the old-school metal skates, except they use large, in-line wheels instead and are alot pricier. Fast AND artistic! I skate on in-line speed skates now, and do it outdoors. But I would love to be also be able to hop %26amp; dance around, just not on my speed skates; gotta figure--which skates? Quads, in-line figure skates, or Scorpions!
Reply:Quads keep your feet planted kinda flat on the ground, whereas inline skates move with your body lean. I know quad skaters who have transfered to inline and ice skating really well, but like you said, it's not easy going back to quads! Quads are slower than inlines - so yes, I do think inlines are better for recreation like long distance skating as you mentioned.





Artistic things: Yes, quads for sure, and some stuff can be done on inlines but it looks "clunkier" in my opinion. Have you ever seen this product? The Pic Skate http://www.picskate.com/ They are inlines that have been designed to be like ice skates . . . artistic skating can be done with those (look into it - there's competitions and everything).
Reply:I love quads, because they are much easier to turn on (so you can do spins ). However, It's really hard to do jumps and things on them.
