Im a hockey goalie at the house level and will probably move onto highschool level next year, Goalie skates?

I play with regualr player skates, well because im one of the few hockey players with a tight budget, and happen to be a goalie. I was able to find all my equipment used and good priced, when it came to goalie skates i couldnt find a pair used let alone for under 200 dollars. I think its because of sizing. I mean the used store near me has Nike Bauer and other great skates used for like 20 dollars. I currently play with Bauer player skates, on a scale 1-10 how much will goalie skates increase my preformance, and are they necessary? Where can i find a cheap used pair around size 11's, why are they so much more than regular ones?

If your playing ice hockey i would highly advice goalie skates, but for roller hockey it doesn't make that big a difference. You can probably find some older skates that aren't highlow if your really all that considered.
Reply:Like all goalie equipment, skates are basically a specialty item and I doubt there are many people trading in their old skates. Specialty items are more expensive because the more you make of something, the less it costs to make. So regular player skates are relatively cheap to produce, but goalie skates aren't. Also they're specially reinforced, which is more expensive to produce.

Most "player" skates don't really have that much in them, or special technology, even the $300 or 400 skates, just stiffer materials.

I'd definitely try ebay or certain online sites like hockeygiant, hockeymonkey.com, cyclone taylor, etc. If you're lucky you'll find a used pair as your first ones, otherwise save up and prepare to make the transition later. Since you already seem to know your exact size for different brands, it will help you a lot with ordering online. Ask a parent or adult friend to help out if you don't have a way to buy (cc or debit card) online and pay them the cash.
Reply:It will make a HUGE difference, though they do take a little getting used to. This coming from someone who had Graf 705's (the very best player skates IMHO) when I got a pair of CCM 852 goalie skates .. it helped so much. You're lower to the ice so it's easier to drop down in butterfly and stop the low shots. MUCH more side protection because of the plastic cowling. (on player skates you just have the protection that comes from the boot, on goalie skates it's like a 2nd level) In roller if you can't get goalie specific ones what you could do is put smaller (like aggressive style 59mm) wheels it will help but it's not the same. I too am on a tight budget, but like the quote I saw on goaliestore.com "The best goalies enjoy every minute on the ice". And the more you enjoy it, the more confident you will be, the more confident you will be, the better you will play. :) Have fun and enjoy your new skates.
Reply:yes big difference, try Ebay good deals
Reply:why dont you just go to the pro shop and buy a pair!

Goalie skates are designed for what goalies do, you can shuffle back and forth easier, they fit your pads so that they are closer to the ice, you can slide better because you can dig into the ice more!

They are also big for protection, i played varsity and when those shots hit you, they hit you hard! Thats why there is a protective covering on the toe of goalie skates - its there so you dont break your toes.

Also for goalie skates where the blade and boot meet there isnt a big gap so a puck and stick cant get though

Does that help?
