Why did my feet and ankles hurt when i wore my new figure skates ???

When i went ice skating today i wore my brand new figure skates that i bought yesterday and as soon as i went on the ice my feet and ankles hurt like mad !!! I had to put up with the pain. Is this because i didnt break them in yet ??? if so can u please give me ways to hurry up the process of breaking them in.please. Thank-you..

P.S dont say the one about wearing damp socks because it doesnt work.

Why did my feet and ankles hurt when i wore my new figure skates ???
You're right -- the wet sock trick doesn't work! Unfortunately, breaking in skates just takes time. Put your guards on, wear your skates at home while you're watching TV and walk in them a little. Don't lace them all the way up right away. Skip the last "lace hole" and don't lace the top hook. Until you feel a little more comfortable in the boots, this will allow for some flexibility. When you feel they're broken in, lace them as you normally would. While skating, do lots of things to get into your knees/ankles, such as waltz jumps, crossovers, swizzles, etc. Pay attention to where your feet are hurting in the skates. If you're having problems in the ankles, pinky toe area or ball of the foot (side), a pro shop can "punch" those areas out for you. They have tools that stretch the leather a little outward, creating more room for joints and taking the pressure off of them. If you're having a lot of rubbing in the tounge area, check rainbosports.com or the Bunga Pad site -- they have specially designed sleeves and discs to put over those areas and prevent rubbing. Or -- even cheaper -- go to Target, Walgreens...whatever and get a bag of the round makeup sponges. They're probably 99 cents for a bag of them, but you can cut a small circle out of the middle and use them to cushion your ankle, spots prone to blisters or other places that need a little extra padding. Congrats on the new skates!!
Reply:u probably was not use to the skate, it will feel comfortably later
Reply:they probably hurt because u have to break them in and get used to them until they rnt so stiff
Reply:You have to break them in, as you know. It will take like ten days, and there isnt a way of making it go faster.

As they start to break in, they should feel better.

You can wear them around the house (with gaurds on of course) and that will help, because when you actually go skating they wont be as stiff.

When you do wear them, bend your ankles and knees, then come up. Do this as much as you can, which should bend them and make them more comfy. If your not wearing them, push the ankles in and out with your hands and bend the leather a little.

In the mean time you can little rubber sock type things. They are just a thin gel cylinder that goes around your ankle and prevents that sort of pain. Go to back to your skate shop and get them, or ask if they have anything else.
Reply:I don't know if this will work , but they sell shoe stretchers in places like a shoe repair store/s. Just look around :

Reply:Figure skates will take a while to break in. It depends on your level, like a Senior level skater could break theirs in after one day of skating. Since you sound like more of a beginner skater, it could take about a week to break them in, or 4-7 days of skating for 1-2 hours.

You can leave the top set of the metal/plastic white/gold colored hooks untied for the next week or so you skate in them. This helps to take away some of the stiffness in the boot.

You can also buy Bunga Pads or Silipos Pads to protect and help your ankles. They are like a tube/wrap, except they are lined with silicone. You put them over your socks. Even though they are quite expensive, they usually last me 1 1/2 years for each ankle tube, and I skate 5-6 days a week (about 11 hours a week).

You can buy Bunga Pads at Bungapads.com

You can buy them in long sleeves that you just cut to the right size. Also, you can use them on you heels.
Reply:you have to break them in, and you may not have tied them tight enough

What do i look for in aggressive in-line skates? Is there a site i can go to?

My bf wants aggressive skates, and i want to get him a pair. Myself, i have knowledge about in-lines but not aggressive in-lines. Any ideas?

What do i look for in aggressive in-line skates? Is there a site i can go to?
There are a lot of different factors in aggressive skates these days; soft boot vs. hard boot, freestyle vs. four wheel frames, cuff stiffness, etc. If he's never tried it before you can start him out with pretty much anything since he probably doesn't have a preference yet. I would definately suggest a four wheel frame though as it will be easier for him to learn. Following are a few online skate shops you can check out. Some good, affordable skates would probably be Razors or Rollerblade. Both with very good reputations and good price points.

Please, please, please stay away from places like Wal-Mart and Big-5. Most chain sporting good stores will over charge for skates and carry the worst (or most outdated) models out there.

If you have questions on particular skates, all of these shops have 800 numbers and would be happy to help. They're all skater operated so you should get good advice. I've been involved in the sport for 10 years now as well, so if you have questions, feel free to contact me.

Good luck!!!

Why do my feet always hurt and get numb when I wear ice skates, rollerblades, ski boots, etc.?

I just returned from a day of skiing. The entire day my feet were killing me (even after I tried on 4 or 5 pairs of boots until I got some that seemed to fit). Then I started really thinking... Since childhood anytime I've ever worn skates (ice or rollerblades) or ski boots my feet have always been in pain or numb. With ice skates and roller blades I've even tried having the boots baked and molded to my foot. Is it a foot width or height problem? Circulation? I'm now 27, what's my deal?

Why do my feet always hurt and get numb when I wear ice skates, rollerblades, ski boots, etc.?
i used to ice skate as a kid and teenager and used to have the same problem with roller and ice skates, everyone tells you to wear good thick socks when you ice skate, i found that when i wore socks that were too think my feet use to burn and feel like they were on fire and i use to get this pain down the outsides of my feet and sometimes numbness. i started wearing thinner socks so my feet could move more freely in the skate i the problem disappeared . the biggest problem was the type of skate for me my first hockey ice skates were bauer ones the cheaper ones with the big thick sock already inside , same as roller skates , i found these skates were just not suitable for me i bought a pair of graf hockey skates without a sock inside and have never had a problem since , i have gone through about 4 pairs of these in my lifetime and no probs to date . i still ice skate now however only when on holidays some where cold as i live on small island in sun we have no ice rink and if hiring skates always pick a pair without the sock already in and i wear thinner socks ..

hope this helps you with your problem
Reply:Maybe you tie them too tightly cutting off the blood flow the feet.
Reply:It really could be a circulation problem. You can't discount that...but to be sure, you would want to see a doctor.

However, it is more than likely a sock problem. Wear only one sock, and make sure it is a thin sock. Dress socks are fine, athletic socks are better for their sweat wicking properties.

I even know people that don't ski with socks at all!

Here's another thought: how often do you put these contraptions on your feet? If you rarely ski, it would be expected that when you do put them on, they will hurt. This isn't uncommon. Sometimes your body has to adjust, and over a period of days, you may not notice any pain.
Reply:My guess is that poor circulation is the cause. You can get tested for that, but I don't know how it's treated.
Reply:i think everybody or most ppl get this. because they need to be tight
Reply:As a ski instructor, whenever a student tells me that their feet hurt I check to see what they have shoved into the top of their boots. Often kids have their jeans or sweatpants jammed into the top of the boot and this will cause all sorts of foot pain because of pinched nerves and interrupted circulation.

Also, what Dolly said about thick vs. thin socks is true for me, too. Thin is better and ultimately warmer.

Make sure there is nothing inside your boot except your foot and one thin, smooth sock. No seams, no wrinkles, no sweatpants, no blue jeans, nothing but sock. Everything else on your legs should pull down over the OUTSIDE of your boot.

Also, if the pain is in your toes, make sure your toe nails, especially the one on your big toe, is nice and short.
Reply:you are meant to take off your normal shoes first
Reply:visit a chiropractor, masseuse, and hot tub. loosen up your muscles by stretching before and after skiing. do yoga and swimming year round and talk to a ski shop about the boots.

How often are you supposed to sharpen your ice skates?

How often are you supposed to sharpen your ice skates?

How often are you supposed to sharpen your ice skates?
Depending on how often you skate depends on how often you should sharpen them. Generally they say about 20 hours of skating before you get them sharpened, but you will learn to do it more or less depending on how you like your skates.
Reply:Depending on how much you skate, it is either every 3-6 weeks or every 18-20 hours.
Reply:depends on...

-how often you skate

-the type of skating that you are doing (ice dance, synchro, free skate)

-the type of blade that you have

-the quality of ice that you skate on

-the age of your blade
Reply:it depends i skate every week for 5 hours 3 traning sessions and i am a goalie i sharpen them mabey1s a mont but my freands say once every two weeks

just get your nail and run the back of your nail on one of the edges and depending on how much nail comes of is dependent of ho much sharpening you need

its really a personal thing you need to get your skates sharpend when you think they need it but dont do it to much becouse you will ware the blade down.
Reply:It depends on how much you skate, how hard you skate . . . and your preference! Rough ice and walking around even on the rink mats without your guards can dull your blades faster too.

They generally say 20-30 hours of skating. If your blades start getting dull, your blades can't grip the ice properly . . .essentially you'll be slipping . . . and even if it's slight, it can affect your spins and jumps!

I personally loved dull blades. But I left it for so long and didn't sharpen them til they were really bad. The longer you leave them, the bigger the adjustment you will probably have to make after you get them sharpened (and you WILL notice your "new" edges - oh you will feel like you're sticking to the ice!!). So I don't recommend extending your sharpening time too long!! On the flip side, if you sharpen them too often, you shorten the life of your blades.
